If They Can Lose It, They Never Really Learned It.
If you know Pam Harris, you know she is all about reasoning. But you also know your students need to master their basic facts. And in the past this has often meant students resorting to drills. But what if we could have the best of both worlds - learning basic facts through reasoning?
Developing fact fluency is an integral part of elementary math instruction. It’s tempting to use flash cards or online platforms to learn them through rote-memorization and repetition because it feels quicker. But it often means students learn facts in disconnected ways without understanding the relationships between numbers and over time their memories fade, and this leads to learning loss.
So how can we effectively build all the mathematical reasoning necessary to master with understanding so many basic facts? This is what first drew Pam to NumberClub. For the first time, teachers had a tool to help students learn facts through reasoning because NumberClub games are both motivating and designed to promote mathematical reasoning. If students learn facts through reasoning they are not only more likely to remember them, they are more likely to be able to use them.
If you want this to be the year you decide to make the shift to learning basic facts through reasoning, this webinar is for you.
Where Gameplay Meets the DMR Framework
This webinar is a first of its kind. We're looking specifically at Pam Harris's Developing Mathematical Reasoning (DMR) Framework, which is a research-backed progression that maps out how mathematical thinking actually develops over time. And we’re looking at it through the lens of the NumberClub math games.
The games aren't just fun. They're building denser mathematical brains. In this webinar, you'll see how they build:
- Additive Reasoning — getting to know and love numbers up to 100, through the game "Brick Up”
- Multiplicative Reasoning — building a real facility with multiplication and division, through the game “Stick & Split”
- Advanced Multiplicative Reasoning with Prime Numbers — developing number flexibility and deep understanding of number structure, through the game “Number Ramble”
- Spatial Reasoning — how visual and geometric thinking supports fact fluency.
- Fact fluency through reasoning — genuine efficiency and understanding, not speed drills
When kids play NumberClub games, they're not just practicing. They're developing the kind of reasoning that carries them through all of mathematics.
About The Speakers
Pam Harris
Pam Harris, award winning author of Developing Mathematical Reasoning: Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms, is shifting the way we view and teach mathematics. She is a mom, former high school math teacher, university lecturer, author, and the Founder of Math is FigureOutAble.
Math teachers around the world rave about her online Building Powerful Mathematics workshops. For over 20 years, Pam has been helping leaders and teachers reach more students in less time so that students math with confidence and success.
David Tymm
David Tymm is the founder of NumberClub and has spent years building software for schools. He started NumberClub because he kept watching kids memorize their times tables and couldn't stop asking why we teach them that way instead of through reasoning.
His belief, and the foundation the whole company is built on, is that young children are naturally far better at math than most school systems allow them to be. David is based in Devon, England, and is also a school governor and dad to three daughters.
